Designing for 1080 × 1920
The safe zone is the design
A story is full-bleed, and the app layers its interface over it: your profile picture and name across the top, the reply field and any captions or link stickers across the bottom. In practice the top and bottom 250 pixels of a 1920-pixel frame are contested.
Keep headlines, faces and anything you need read inside the central 1080 × 1420 band. Use the outer regions for background, gradient or texture — content that looks intentional when a Send button lands on it.
One frame, about two seconds
Stories are advanced by tapping, and the median viewer decides whether to keep watching almost immediately. That is a different design problem from a feed post someone scrolls past at their own pace: there is time for one idea, at large size, and nothing else.
It is also watched with the sound off far more often than not, so any information carried by audio has to exist in the frame too.
Leave room for the sticker you will add later
Link stickers, polls, questions and location tags are placed in the app after upload, and they are large. Designing a frame that is full to the edges means every sticker covers something.
Leave a deliberate clear band — usually low-centre, above the reply field — for whatever interactive element the post needs. It is easier than moving a sticker onto a headline and hoping.

- Open Graph (1200 × 630)The image that appears whenever a link to your site is pasted anywhere — Slack, WhatsApp, iMessage, LinkedIn, Facebook, X. It is the most widely rendered image most sites own, and the one most often left unset.
- Instagram square (1080 × 1080)The most placement-compatible shape on social. A square post is never cropped by a profile grid, never letterboxed by a feed, and works unchanged on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X.
- Instagram portrait (1080 × 1350)Four-by-five is the tallest image Instagram will show in the feed, which makes it the most vertical space a single post can occupy. It is also the shape the profile grid crops hardest.
