Square survives the grid
An Instagram profile is a square grid, and it centre-crops whatever shape you posted to fill it. A 4:5 portrait post loses its top and bottom fifth there; a square post loses nothing.
That makes 1:1 the right choice whenever the profile grid is part of the plan — a series that has to read as a set, a quote sequence, anything where the tile is the artefact rather than the feed appearance.
One asset, several networks
Portrait formats take more vertical space in the Instagram feed and perform accordingly, but they are Instagram-specific. Square is the only shape that goes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Pinterest without a second crop.
If the same design has to appear in four places this week, starting square costs you a little feed real estate and saves you three exports and three judgement calls about where to crop.
Type size and re-encoding
Every network re-encodes what you upload, and small text is the first thing a lossy encoder damages. At 1080 pixels, keep body text at roughly 36 pixels or above and headlines far larger; below that, edges pick up visible artefacts after the platform's own compression pass.
Upload at the full 1080 rather than a smaller export. The platform compresses either way, and its encoder does better work from a large clean source.

- Open Graph (1200 × 630)The image that appears whenever a link to your site is pasted anywhere — Slack, WhatsApp, iMessage, LinkedIn, Facebook, X. It is the most widely rendered image most sites own, and the one most often left unset.
- Instagram portrait (1080 × 1350)Four-by-five is the tallest image Instagram will show in the feed, which makes it the most vertical space a single post can occupy. It is also the shape the profile grid crops hardest.
- Story (1080 × 1920)Full-screen vertical, and the only social format where the platform draws its own controls on top of your design. Roughly a quarter of the frame is contested before you start.
