Square ad templates — 1080 × 1080
If a campaign ships one creative, this is usually the one. Square is accepted by more placements than any other shape, and it is the safest default when you do not know where an ad will run.

Designing for 1080 × 1080
An ad square is not an organic square
The dimensions are identical to an organic feed post and the design brief is not. An organic post is seen by people who chose to follow you and will give it a moment; an ad interrupts someone who did not ask, and has roughly the length of a scroll to earn the next second.
That changes the hierarchy. One idea, stated at a size that reads while moving, with the subject or the benefit visible before any text is processed. Branding matters but it is not the opening move — a logo in the corner is enough.
Why square wins on coverage
Ad platforms distribute a single creative across placements with different native ratios and crop to fit. A square sits close to the middle of that range, so it loses less to any given crop than a wide or a tall creative does.
Some feed placements will still crop it toward 4:5, taking the left and right edges. Keep the subject centred and the outer 5% free of anything load-bearing, and the same file survives every placement it is served into.
Carousels need one ratio
Every frame of a carousel must share the same aspect ratio, and square is the usual choice because it works for both a product sequence and a story sequence.
Design the set together rather than one at a time. A carousel is read as a strip, so a consistent grid, a consistent type scale and a consistent colour across frames is what makes it feel deliberate — and it is the part that is hard to retrofit.
Testing variants
Square is the cheapest shape to iterate on, because one design produces many variants by changing a single element: the headline, the accent colour, the product shot. Keeping every other variable fixed is what makes the test readable.
Export the set at the full 1080. Ad platforms re-encode on upload, and a creative you have already compressed hard goes through that pass a second time.
Other sizes in Simple ads
- Landscape ad (1200 × 628)The standard landscape creative for paid social and display. It is the shape most placements accept, and the one where the platform — not you — draws the call to action.
- Story (1080 × 1920)Full-screen vertical, paid. The frame is the whole phone, and the platform puts a sponsored label at the top and a call-to-action at the bottom before anyone sees your design.
