What a photo filter really is
A filter sounds like something added to an image, but it is better understood as a saved set of decisions. Every look on this page is a specific combination of adjustments — a little more contrast, a shift in white balance, a change in saturation — bundled so you can apply all of it with one click instead of finding the same combination by hand each time.
That framing is useful because it tells you what to do when a filter is almost right. You do not need a different filter; you need to move one of the sliders it set. Vivid too strong on a portrait? Pull saturation back and keep the contrast. Warm too heavy under tungsten light? Reduce temperature and leave the exposure lift alone. The preset is a starting point that happens to be one click away, not a finished treatment.
It also explains why the same filter behaves differently on different photographs. A look that adds twenty points of saturation transforms a flat, overcast landscape and wrecks an already-vivid sunset. Filters do not know what is in your image; they apply a fixed change to whatever they are given. Judging the result rather than trusting the name is the whole skill.
The four looks, and what each one is for
Vivid raises contrast and saturation and adds a modest sharpen. It suits flat images that need punch — overcast landscapes, dull product shots, screenshots of colourful interfaces, anything photographed in soft light that ended up softer than intended. It is the least suitable look for portraits, because saturation affects skin faster than it affects anything else in the frame.
Warm shifts white balance toward gold, lifts exposure slightly and adds a little saturation. It is the default for people, food and interiors, all of which read as more inviting on the warm side of neutral. Cool does the reverse, moving colour toward blue and adding a touch of contrast. It suits technical subjects, snow and water, clean product photography on white, and any image where a yellow cast from indoor lighting needs cancelling.
Mono removes colour entirely and compensates with extra contrast and sharpening. That compensation is not decoration: colour is one of the ways an image separates a subject from its background, and removing it flattens the picture unless something else takes over the job. Black and white is also the honest answer to badly mixed lighting — when a room is lit by daylight and tungsten at once, no white-balance setting will please both, and removing colour removes the argument.
Where filters end and adjustment begins
Behind the presets are eleven controls, and they fall into four groups. Tonal range comes first: black point, white point and gamma decide which input value becomes pure black, which becomes pure white, and how the midtones are distributed between them. These are the most powerful controls on the panel and the least fashionable, because they fix the underlying image rather than styling it.
Then come exposure and temperature, which correct how the photograph was captured — overall brightness and the colour of the light it was taken under. Then brightness, contrast, saturation and hue, which shape how it is presented. Sharpen and blur come last, operating on the final pixels rather than on the original capture.
That is the order the tool applies them in, and the order is deliberate. Correcting white balance before adjusting saturation means saturation works on a neutral base rather than amplifying a colour cast. Sharpening before blurring stops you sharpening noise that the blur was meant to hide. You do not have to think about the pipeline, but knowing it exists explains why the same slider values produce different results in different tools.
The practical consequence is that a preset is never a dead end. Apply Vivid to a flat photograph, then lower the black point if the shadows have gone solid, or reduce sharpening if edges have picked up a pale outline. Every control the preset touched is still a control, still numeric, and still individually resettable. Working this way — one click to get most of the distance, then two or three deliberate corrections — is faster than either building a look from eleven defaults or cycling through presets hoping one lands.
Restraint, and how to know you have gone too far
The most common mistake with filters is quantity. An adjustment that looks striking on its own frequently looks garish next to the original, and by the time you have made four of them each one is compounding the last. A useful habit is to push a slider until you can clearly see the effect, then move it back by roughly a third. The result usually looks intentional rather than processed.
There are three specific failure modes worth watching for. Clipped highlights, where the brightest areas become featureless white and the texture in a sky or a shirt disappears for good. Crushed shadows, the same thing at the dark end, where detail in hair or fabric becomes a solid block. And halos, the pale outlines around high-contrast edges that appear when sharpening is pushed too hard, which are far more visible at full size than in the small preview you were judging by.
None of these can be undone after export, because the information they destroyed is genuinely gone. The advantage of a live preview is that you can always dial back before committing, and the advantage of numeric sliders is that you can return a single control to its default without abandoning everything else you did.
Filters that never leave your device
Filtering happens in your browser. When you drop a file it is staged in your browser's own storage, decoded on your machine, and every adjustment is computed there. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is queued on a server, and there is nothing on our side to retain or delete afterwards.
The practical difference is not only privacy, although that matters for client work, family photographs and anything under an embargo. It is also responsiveness: a slider that adjusts a local image updates as you drag it, while one that round-trips to a server cannot. Editing by eye requires immediate feedback, and immediate feedback requires the work to be local.
It also means there is no upload cap deciding what you are allowed to open, and no dependency on a connection once the page has loaded. The real limit is your device's memory, which ordinary photographs will not trouble.
