YouTube thumbnail templates — 1280 × 720

Design for the smallest size it will be seen at

A thumbnail is authored at 1280 × 720 and consumed at a fraction of that. In the suggested-video column it renders around 210 pixels wide; in some mobile layouts smaller still. That is a sixth of the width you are designing at, which means a sixth of the type size and a sixth of the detail.

The practical test is to zoom your design out to 15% and look at it. If the words are unreadable and the subject is ambiguous, the thumbnail does not work — no amount of detail that only appears at full size will help, because almost nobody sees it at full size.

This is why the thumbnails that perform tend to look crude in isolation: three or four words at enormous type, one clear subject, and colours that separate hard from the page around them.

The bottom-right corner is not yours

YouTube draws the video duration over the bottom-right of every thumbnail, and a red progress bar along the bottom edge once a viewer has partly watched. Anything placed there is covered.

Keep the lower-right eighth of the frame free of text and faces. The rest of the frame is yours, including the bottom-left, which is a useful place for a channel mark.

Exporting without wrecking it

Upload at the full 1280 × 720 rather than something smaller. YouTube re-encodes what you send, and its encoder produces a visibly better result from a large clean source than from one you have already compressed hard.

Stay under the 2 MB limit — an ordinary thumbnail exported as JPEG at quality 85 lands well under it. If a text-heavy design shows edge artefacts at that quality, export PNG instead; the file will be larger but the type stays crisp.
