Where remove.bg is better
- Their segmentation model is excellent, particularly on hair and on semi-transparent edges, and it has had years of tuning on an enormous corpus. On a difficult portrait it will frequently produce a better mask than anything else available at one click.
- Their API has been in production for years, has official libraries in a dozen languages, and handles output up to 50 megapixels. Ours is in beta with a 1,000-operation monthly allowance.
- Desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux, plus Photoshop and Figma plugins, mean it fits into workflows that never touch a browser.
- Being absorbed into Canva is a strength for anyone already in Canva: the cutout lands directly in the design tool rather than in a downloads folder.
Where OpusImg is better
- The rest of the job is here too. A cutout usually needs resizing, compressing, placing on a canvas and exporting, and on OpusImg those steps are local and free rather than a second product.
- Pricing is a plan rather than credits that expire. Subscription credits that do not carry over are a real cost for uneven usage.
- No shutdown date. That is a low bar and it is currently a relevant one.

As of the verification date on this page, remove.bg's own pricing page carries a banner saying the standalone website will not be available after 1 December 2026 at 09:00 CET, that background removal moves to Canva, and that pay-as-you-go credits expire at that moment. The API documentation says integrations move to Leonardo.Ai.
If you are choosing a background remover to build on this month, that is the single most important fact on this page, and it is more important than any quality comparison. If you are choosing one to use by hand this afternoon, it matters much less.
Neither of these runs in your browser
It would be convenient to claim the privacy advantage here that applies to our compressor. It does not apply. Background removal needs a segmentation model with weights measured in gigabytes and GPU-class compute, and shipping that to a browser tab is not currently practical.
OpusImg's background removal uploads your image and processes it on a server, exactly as remove.bg does. Every tool on the site is labelled with where it runs for this reason. The local-processing argument is real for compression, conversion, resizing, redaction and OCR; it is not real for this tool, and saying otherwise would be the kind of claim that makes the rest of a page untrustworthy.
Credits versus a plan
remove.bg meters by the cutout: one credit per full-resolution image, previews free on the website. That is a clean model and it suits genuinely occasional use — three credits for $3 with no subscription is hard to argue with if you need three cutouts.
It suits uneven use badly. Subscription credits are valid only within their month and do not accumulate, so a quiet month is money spent on nothing and a busy one means buying more. Whether that is better or worse than a flat plan depends entirely on your pattern, and anyone telling you one model is universally cheaper is selling something.
Which to use
Use remove.bg when
You need the strongest available mask on difficult subjects, you want a Photoshop or Figma plugin, you are already in Canva, or your usage is genuinely occasional and credits suit it.
Use OpusImg when
Background removal is one step of a longer job, you want the surrounding tools to be free and local, or you would rather not build on a product with an announced end date.
